Monthly Archives: October 2015

I fell in love with Monk aka Nicolas when I read Harder To Fall and now that he’s best buddy and hottie rugby player, Grayson takes the spotlight for the 3rd Addition Hill Novel: Learning To Fall, I was ecstatic!

Synopsis:

“Go out with a stereotypical romance novel hero WHO ISN’T YOUR TYPE.”

Avid reader and art student Steph is participating in a monthly blog challenge to Live Like Fiction, and this was the task for October. When Grayson, former co-captain of her university rugby team, walks into her class, she knows it’s meant to be – she has to go out with this guy. Even if she’s never been attracted to big, hunky, athletic types. With Grayson’s “player” reputation off the field, Steph thinks he’ll be good for one date that’ll be worth blogging about, and that’s it.

But you know how it goes: Soon, it becomes more than just one date – and Steph and Grayson are caught up in “living like fiction.” How long can they keep playing their roles before reality steps in?

What I like about the story:

The artistic and creative Steph! I see myself with Steph. Not the artist side of her because I’m not good in painting/drawing but the blogger/book reviewer side of her. I love this girl a lot! She is part-time instructor (like me) and blogger (she likes books) who creates masterpieces with her hands and forms inspiring blog entries.

Grayson is not the typical Rugby player. The happy-go-lucky man I pictured on my mind when I read about Grayson was not I expected when I learned about his hardships and love for the sports. I was heart-broken and at the same time happy for this big guy for meeting Steph! Can I also have a boyfriend like him even though we are just pretending?

Family versus dreams versus careers. Steph and Grayson’s aspirations and goals in life were like hitting the bull-eye. Before getting to the target, there are a lot of interventions and obstacles that they have to face with or without the help of each other.

Chapter 7:

Learning to fall Chapter 7

The Girlfriend Stuff

Learning to fall, like to spend time

How it ends:

Blog entry and the perfect boyfriend ever!

Verdict:

I’m jovial that I learned new things about rugby (which I’m not familiar with)! The concept and the plot of the story were good. The Live Like Fiction challenge was also awesome though if I am in the shoes of Steph, I might not try it. Was it really the end? Can I ask for more Team #Stayson? I can’t wait to have a paper back copy of this new adult novel and the book cover is lovely indeed!

Thank you for the Advance Reader’s Copy!

The last stop for the #JustWritePH—For The Win:

JustWritePH-ForTheWin-CoverAuthors: Viai, Maita Rue, Mary Beatrice Ponce, and Saelynne G. LeClerk

The Seeker’s Inn by Maita Rue

Alexandra Jekyll inherits the Seeker’s Inn but there is a condition. Dearly departed Aunt Emily states that she has to run the inn for a full season in order to keep it. Simple, right? Things get complicated when she arrives to find Aunt Emily’s nephew, Dunstan Draycott, also claiming the inn. Alexandra is determined to keep the inn for herself and for her little sister. She is reluctant to call on her twin, Alexa Hyde, who was showing an interest in Aunt Emily’s nephew, for help. Will Hyde and Jekyll work together or will their rivalry tear the inn and their hearts apart?

What I like about the story:

Alexandra-Alexa-Duncan-Dunstan’s love team. I was quite hesitant with these ‘love match’. The reserved but strong-willed Alexandra Jekyll who fell in love with the charming and funny Duncan Draycott. While the boyish but seductive Alexa Hyde, who is head over heels in love with the pompous but loving brother, Dunstan Draycott. They are most outrageous couples I’ve ever encountered.

The inherited Seeker’s Inn. Reading about the inheritance of Alexandra about The Seeker’s Inn was quite mysterious to me. Why the unknown niece of Aunt Emily instead of her very close nephew? The name of the place also caught my attention, what mystery is involved with the inn? I’m glad that all of the questions on my mind were answered at the end of the story.

The Crazy “Twins”! The surprise at the end! Wow! Bravo to the writer!  I love how the Jekyll-Hyde Legacy concept was explained. I couldn’t believe that most of the characters have the ‘other cousin’. I think deep inside we have our own Hyde that we just wanted to be in the mirror forever.

How it ends:

Seeker Inn was handled successfully to its well-deserved owner and everyone was happy that finally they’re kept secret is finally revealed in the world.

Perk’s rating: 4/5 (I still wished that Alexandra ended with Dunstan.)

Two thoughts that popped in my mind when I saw the summary at the back of the book:

  1. Real killer
  2. 22 minutes
damage done

Photo from Goodreads.com

This novel would definitely put me on the edge of my seats. It didn’t disappoint me though.

Synopsis:

22 minutes separate Julia Vann’s before and after.

Before: Julia had a twin brother, a boyfriend, and a best friend.

After: She has a new identity, a new hometown, and memories of those twenty-two minutes that refuse to come into focus. At least, that’s what she tells the police.

Now that she’s Lucy Black, she’s able to begin again. She’s even getting used to the empty bedroom where her brother should be. And her fresh start has attracted the attention of one of the hottest guys in school, a boy who will do anything to protect her. But when someone much more dangerous also takes notice, Lucy’s forced to confront the dark secrets she thought were safely left behind.

One thing is clear: The damage done can never be erased. It’s only just beginning…

What I like about the story:

Julia Vann-Lucy Black. Two personas in one, real person. Is this girl having MPD or Multiple Disorder Personality? I was curious. Yet, upon reading the end part of the story, my hunch was wrong. I was astonished with the actual scenario.

The acceptance and realization. This novel amazed me with its characters. Julia and Ryan’s’ parents, what is wrong with these people? They are weird in some ways and I truly believed they caused what happened with one of the twins. Spence, the psychologist is a man who only wants fame and discovery, but he actually cares with Ryan. Props to Alane and the hot heartthrob Michael Silverman because these two shown unconditional love for Lucy.

How it ends:

Sociopath on the loose. Another persona.

Verdict:

I needed a breather after the revelation of the 22 minutes and everything! That was a blow! Can I request for a continuation? I was left hanging at the end. I had mixed feelings while reading the book and I loved how it piqued my curiosity.

The first time that I saw Romancing the Dark in the City of Light, I instantly became interested.

RTHLCD

Photo from Goodreads.com

  • Long title: Perhaps!
  • Ann Jacobus: First time to hear about her!
  • Paris: Please bring me there now!

Yet what actually caught my attention was the book cover and the hidden meaning behind the title. That’s why I immediately signed up for the Pinoy Book Blog Tour for Romancing the Dark in the City of Light by Ann Jacobus.

Expected publication: October 6th 2015

Synopsis:

A troubled teen, living in Paris, is torn between two boys, one of whom encourages her to embrace life, while the other—dark, dangerous, and attractive—urges her to embrace her fatal flaws.

Summer Barnes just moved to Paris to repeat her senior year of high school. After being kicked out of four boarding schools, she has to get on track or she risks losing her hefty inheritance. Summer is convinced that meeting the right guy will solve everything. She meets two. Moony, a classmate, is recovering against all odds from a serious car accident, and he encourages Summer to embrace life despite how hard it can be to make it through even one day. But when Summer meets Kurt, a hot, mysterious older man who she just can’t shake, he leads her through the creepy underbelly of the city-and way out of her depth.

When Summer’s behavior manages to alienate everyone, even Moony, she’s forced to decide if a life so difficult is worth living.

What I like about the story:

Moony and Summer: My favorite couple.  The first scene that Moony was introduced, I knew that I’m going to fall in love with this guy! I can’t blame Summer either. He is the perfect boy next door (with crutches), very friendly and alive! His optimism is very contagious. Summer, on the other hand, is a typical rebellious teenager who only wants attention. I am sad for her and while I was reading the novel, I want to hug her.

Struggle within their selves. From the beginning, Summer’s behavior is like an open book. She wanted to kill herself. Moony was a surprise. I couldn’t believe what truly goes into his mind. Wow!

Kurt, who? Seriously, I hated this guy from the beginning. I saw him as the ‘love triangle’ between the two. Yet,as the story progresses,  hey there is something going on with this creepy man who is like a mushroom popping everywhere! Hands down with the revelation of his ‘real identity’!

Quote to remember:

*Page 202

A text from Summer’s mother

“In the depths of winter, I finally learned that there is within me an invincible summer.”-Albert Cadmus

How it ends:

Airport. Airplane. Moony and Summer, together.

Verdict:
Honestly, this is so far my favorite Young Adult Novel for 2015!  It is quite a dark YA, but refreshing and compelling to readers like me. Congratulations for the debut novel Ann Jacobus! I’m going to buy my own copy as soon as it arrived in the leading bookstores in the Philippines!

Perk’s rating: 5.5/5 (Highly recommended!)
